The story is about long-lost family, immigration and national identity. It's less autobiographical than it might seem - unlike the protagonist, I go to Brazil regularly and speak Portuguese. The story came out of imagining what it would be like to feel almost completely cut off from your country of origin. Even for me, with all my links to Brazil, it's a loss that never goes away.
